Review of The Hidden Blade (2004) by Michael C — 16 Sep 2008
The forces of modernization and tradition clash in Yoji Yamada's second Meiji-era film. Deep, well-portrayed themes take precedence over swordplay in an era where samurai were employed largely as bureaucrats and functionaries.
Both Hidden Blade and Twilight Samurai take a more realistic look at the period and politics surrounding the Last Samurai.
