Review of The Help (2011) by Brett W — 07 Oct 2012
Wow, what can I say? I am sooo glad I watched this movie!!! I do not understand how anyone could think that this movie "glossed over it's racial themes"! I believe it did an extraordinarily good job of covering it's "racial themes"!! It was of course the central theme to the entire movie.
This movie was made to inspire us to embrace our differences & stand up for what's right not to tear us apart & incite riots. This movie made me laugh & it made me cry! It was horrible yet hilarious! It made me angry but it made me happy! It made me sad that I didn't grow up in that era so I could have fought for such injustice but it also made me grateful that others did.
As a white woman it made me thankful that I grew up an accepting coal miner's daughter in rural WV & not a spoiled, prejudice rich kid in the deep south! It was a roller coaster of emotion!! I am a better person for having watched it.
I hope you find time in your busy schedule to watch it too!! :) Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer & Emma Stone were all wonderful in this movie! But I will NEVER look at chocolate pie the same way again! LOL Enjoy!! ;).
