Review of The Help (2011) by Kay K — 08 Jan 2013
Based on a best-selling novel and set in the south during the civil rights movement of the 60s, this film follows aspiring writer Skeeter as she tries to write a book about what it is like for black maids to work for white families in their town in Mississippi.
The film adaptation was made by Walt Disney and at times, it definitely felt as if it had a little too much of the 'Disney touch'. The subject matter was an interesting one and parts of the film felt as though those issues were brushed over and/or jazzed up. An example of this would be when Celia had a miscarriage or the domestic abuse suffered by Minnie. Those scenes felt a little too light. T.
He acting was solid, especially from Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard and the film was so aesthetically beautiful it made up for any flaws in the mood.
