Review of The Help (2011) by Paul K — 28 Aug 2014
A little lightweight somehow despite the weighty topic. Mississippi in the '60s was a bad place. Very much a Deep South 'how-racist-we-were' genre movie, it's worthy but contrived, with the humorous bits plugged in too readily to let the harsh truth shine.
The story meanders, it's overlong and was no doubt better as a novel. The best substory is the po' white trash girl being studiously ignored by the proper polite racist as hell white women of Jackson.
