Review of The Heiress (1949) by Augustine H — 29 Jul 2014
This is a wonderful movie, and one that did not to cave to 1940's sentimentalism.
Catherine (DeHavilland) is believably made-under and awkward, and Townsend (Clift), though handsome, seems, at first, to be boyish and just-slightly-awkward enough that he might be able to bring her out of her shell. His true character comes out slowly and believably; Clift doesn't overplay the role.
The ending is satisfying logically but not saccharine. It's painful to see Catherine hardened by disappointment, even as it's a relief to believe she can finally stand up for herself. It's also painful to discover that we were right about Mr. Townsend, even as it's a relief to see him shut out of Catherine's life as a result.
