Review of The Heiress (1949) by Tim C — 05 Sep 2009
Ten years after Olivia de Havilland's big break in Gone With The Wind, this movie makes you totally forget that she was once Melanie Hamiliton and shines in a way that could make Vivien Leigh blush.
As the sensitive, shy Catherine Sloper, de Havilland earns her Oscar for Best Actress right as she deals with the deliciously malicious father played by Sir Ralph Richardson, who is displeased with her for not being her mother and viewing her as property, and the sweet, kind, daring Montgomery Clift, who is nothing what he appears to be.
de Havilland is a driving force and this film in this role really exposes her talent of showing her characters in raw delicacy that makes her classic. Truly a highlight of film in the year 1949.
