Review of The Heiress (1949) by Lucy W — 09 Jun 2013
What a magnificent movie this is! De Havilland's performance is one of the best I've ever seen, telling so much with her eyes and her face. The lush production, great acting, and the symbolic use of shadows and stairs as well (representing the defeat and victory of Catherine) are some of the highlights of this complex character study.
Despite the rather "unromantic" ending, it's a perfect finale for Catherine: she turns into a powerful, beautiful woman, finally reaching the dignity and independence she always deserved.
A rich period drama which can still move us thanks to De Havilland's wonderful acting.
