Review of The Heiress (1949) by Nate W — 26 Oct 2009
There are plenty of complimentary things to say about the aesthetic qualities of William Wyler's "The Heiress" â?? from the appropriately ornate production/costume design, photography, and Aaron Copland's lovely score â?? but they are all outshone by Olivia de Havilland's outstanding lead turn.
Her transformation from timid and naïve to hardened and embittered is astonishing. Some swifter editing could have done this film a service, but de Havilland's performance is more than redemptive.
