Review of The Heiress (1949) by Martin T — 30 Oct 2009
Superb melodrama based on a Henry James novel. Olivia de Havilland is a wealthy but socially awkward young girl, Montgomery Clift is the man whose interest in her raises the suspicions of Ralph Richardson, her protective but disdainful father.
The casting is perfect, with a terrific supporting performance by Miriam Hopkins (who had aged quite gracefully since her delightful work with Lubitsch). Wyler's direction is a bit workmanlike and unremarkable, but he gets the job done and has such fine source material to work with.
This is a really compelling story with nuanced characters and complex interpersonal drama. Very satisfying.
