Review of The Heartbreak Kid (1972) by Paul J — 15 Jun 2013
Elaine May's answer to her good friend, Mike Nichol's The Graduate. It's far more subversive though. Charles Grodin is remarkable and May's own daughter plays an extremely unflattering role.
All in all, this is one brave and unique film. It doesn't try to tell you how to think or feel. It's just plain uncomfortable and downright honest. Cassavetes would approve. It could also be called the "bullshit artist".
Our main protagonist is so delusional that it makes this character study quite brilliant.
