Review of The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004) by Noah W — 30 Jun 2007
This may be the single most depressing movie I've ever seen. It deals with the struggles of a young boy, Jeremiah, under the control of his abusive mother and her random boyfriends. However, it is also completely moving.
It is frustrating and, at times, difficult to watch, but over time you can't help but become attached to Jeremiah. That just sets you up for one disappointment after another. This isn't a popcorn-munching, mindless blockbuster; it actually makes you think and challenges your emotions.
It's all perfectly accented by the most amazing child performances I've seen since River Phoenix in "Stand By Me". Jimmy Bennet, as the younger Jeremiah, has been in many mainstream movies recently; however, his acting abilities are unquestionable in this film as he turns seamlessly from pain to anger like only children can.
And before you mock the Sprouse twins, probably because you recognize them from "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," watch this movie. Their dual performance as Jeremiah is nothing short of breath-taking and heart-breaking.
Forget the cameos, the amazing direction, and disgusting turn of Asia Argento as Sarah; this movie is really about the kids.
