Review of The Haunting (1963) by Art W — 07 Nov 2010
Robert Wise's haunted house film is still one of the best in the genre, thanks to some very creepy cinematography and sound effects. The screenplay is a little shaky, with all kinds of subplots under the surface from a lesbian crush to some more relevant daughter-mother issues with Harris' Eleanor being thrown into overwhelming freedom after years of solitude.
For its age it still succeeds as an atmospheric scary movie, especially when compared to the abysmal 1999 remake.
