Review of The Haunting (1963) by Sol H — 29 Jul 2011
This is number two in my favorite movie list, second only to Lord of the Rings. In fact, this is what kept me perpetually into the horror movie genre and has continued to serve as the template for how I judge all horror movies.
In fact, this is one of the rare examples by which the movie was better than the book (not that I'm downing Shirley Jackson; just saying). Everything about this movie works: the para-scientific plot, the acting, the direction, the atmosphere, and what modern horror movies lack, SUBTLETY ! Movies like Saw are all about shock value and the base level impulse of "gross-out" tactics, while this film (along with films like Paranormal Activity and in some ways even more-so its sequels) lets you believe there's some unholy abomination of God lurking in the dark that you cannot and will not see before it devours your soul.
What more can I say about this film? It's scared me since I was nine and has shocked many an audience since.
