Review of The Haunting (1963) by M W — 19 May 2009
A surprisingly effective G-rated classic horror flick that relies more on what you don't see than what you do. Sometimes this means it's a little slow and not particularly scary. That said, there are some really well-done shots that, while not scary, do disturb.
There's a hanging in particular that I LOVED as it was framed artfully and made me giddy thinking that a little kid could see it and be traumatized. What can I say, I like the idea of horrifying children.
.. The whole set-up is pretty great standard haunted house stuff, and you can't go wrong from an inspirado standpoint with a Shirley Jackson story. I was also pretty surprised at how much lesbian undertone the film allowed from Theo.
I dug it. Not perfect, but pretty damn good all things considered.
