Review of The Handmaid's Tale (1990) by Derek B — 02 Sep 2010
Slavish adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel: it's dystopia-by-numbers stuff that you have seen before countless times. This is one of the few films I can think of which might have benefited from some voiceover - as a way of giving the character of Kate some depth.
Not a bad film, it's watchable for sure, but so flat and affectless it's hard to like, it's not entertaining, and it has no real political insight to offer either. Disappointing.
