Review of The Guard (2011) by Alex K — 08 Aug 2012
A wonderfully self-aware piece of film-making, it plays skill-fully with many themes but never gets bogged down in sentiment. Part action, part good-cop/bad-cop The Guard flavours almost every situation with dark humour.
The characters are all great with only a couple of iffy Irish accents, and Don Cheadle proves his believability in any role he faces. Gleeson stands out due to an incredible naturalness he has for the character, which particularly shine in the bitter-sweet scenes with his dying mother.
This will become a cult classic, if only for the entertaining violence and brash lines Brendan Gleeson delivers in a somewhat endearingly honest fashion. Watch this, otherwise you're missing out.
