Review of The Guard (2011) by Ike O — 12 Jul 2015
Solid, if disappointing; a very real lack of substance, making it feel like wit for wit's sake - which is enjoyable in a morsel, but a bit tedious for a feature. Brendan Gleeson is excellent, but the fantastic Don Cheadle is a bit wasted.
The film pales further into insignificance given McDonagh's brilliant, nuanced, hilarious, moving, and thoughtful follow-up 'Calvary', a film that's almost everything 'The Guard' is not.
