Review of The Grifters (1990) by Teri T — 10 Jul 2010
Clunks when it wants to click. For almost the first hour of the film there's no plot to speak of, and watching the characters bounce off each other ought to be enough, but for some reason it's not.
It also doesn't end up having much to do with the story that actually unfolds - it's not that the characters are inconsistent, but it doesn't feel like what we learn about them really puts their actions in a new light.
With a con artist movie you'd expect the sense of plot disconnect might just be because they're not revealing everything that's really going on yet, but without getting into plot specifics, that doesn't really pay off either.
