Review of The Grifters (1990) by David S — 04 Mar 2013
Donald Westlake adapted and Stephen Frears directed this nasty neo-noir gem about a boy, his girlfriend, and his mother. Who Grift. That is con. Other people. Each other. Themselves. The performances are first rate.
The story lags (or seems to) until its shocking ending. This movie is a reminder that 90's crime movies were not a Quentin Tarantino invention. Annette Benning is fearless in this movie. John Cusak is first but Anjelica Huston ultimately steals the movie.
And everything in it.
