Review of The Grey Zone (2001) by Ryan H — 11 Feb 2008
A haunting and horrifying movie about the horrors at Auschwitz. The story centers around the 12th Sonderkommando unit and their attempts to stay alive despite the horrific work conditions [their jobs were to process the victims selected for gassing, and disposing of the dead bodies].
It is also a story about revolt, for they decide to bomb the crematoria. Based on an actual event, and narrated by a Hungarian Jewish doctor who was forced to assist the infamous doctor of death, Josef Mengele in his inhuman experiments upon human subjects, mainly Jews and Gypsies.
The story of human depravity comes across very convincingly, as does the account of what humans will do in desperate times, against their conscience. A gripping movie!
