Review of The Green Mile (1999) by David B — 24 Mar 2013
This was never going to be better than Shawshank Redemption but it's defo up there as a great tear-jerker film and great storytelling with wonderful characters and warmth. Though the film drifts off down some long blind alleys, when Darabont exercises discipline the result is highly effective.
It's a great follow up to his shawshank but it's problem is, is it's too long and does get slow (not boring) more into the middle of the film. The special effects are simple enough, not over-powering the film and the production value is very good.
It has a good shocking scene, which some veiwers may find uncomftable than disturbing but this once again proves how good the acting is, all the cast are wonderful and Tom Hanks brings a certain disipline charm to the role but it's Michael Clarke Ducan who really steals the film, as a convict who's sentance to death but only has a mind of a child, a strengh of a coffen nail but as gentle as a feather and has super-natural powers who can cure the sick.
It's heart is within the human nature but like I said, it's very, very long and to be honest, didn't need to be.
