Review of The Great Silence (1968) by Chris W — 14 Sep 2008
Sergio Corbucci's Django was great, but The Great Silence is even better. One of the darkest westerns I've ever seen, with Jean-Louis Trintignant as a mute gunfighter who squares off against a group of nasty bounty hunters lead by the always great to watch Klaus Kinski.
The film's influence can clearly be seen in the likes of Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller, what with the snowy mountain village and people living out their existence in a wintry hell. An excellent spaghetti western with one of the most pessimistic endings I've ever witnessed.
