Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Ben W — 19 Feb 2008
I doubt fitzgerald would have approved of too much of this. while its hard to go completely wrong with such a wonderful plot and characters, this movie over-romanticizes, a misses several key points. you dont get the sense that the prose and very measured descriptions from the book had much bearing on the film.
there was plenty of "soap opera vision" from the camera. the glittery appearances, the overacting, and just some general wackiness in the portrayal of the novel. I remember liking the film a lot more when I watched it in high school but I guess that makes sense.
