Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Dan H — 11 May 2013
Mia Farrow nails the character of Daisy and is probably the best thing about this film. She is an unlikable (in fact, very much hate-able), shallow, ditzy and rich woman. However, Redford's Gatsby lacks mystique, charm, or grandness and is unspeakably dull (you never want to like him).
Redford seems to completely miss the point of Gatsby and is just terrible in the role, There is no chemistry between Farrow and Redford and I don't buy there romance. See it for Farrow I suppose, Nick is fine in it and Jordan is pretty good.
Overall, I'd say run to see Luhrmann's Gatsby instead of this one. This Gatsby is more of a snooze-fest than anything else, like Redford it's pretty dull.
