Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Philip P — 26 Jul 2009
Malkovich is splendid. All the comedy around Buck Howard is splendid. The Colin Hanks character is insipid, which is all the bigger problem as he also narrates. Emily Blunt is a fine actress (see SUNSHINE CLEANING) but the role of gratuitous love interest is a lazy plot-stuffing device typical of uninspired screenwriters (as is the theme of our need to believe in magic).
You would have to be a very brilliant actress indeed to shine in such a role. Tom Hanks acquits himself admirably in an affectionate cameo as Colin's father.
