Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Jeffrey M — 29 Apr 2011
Not a bad movie, but unfortunately, it just doesn't live up to its potential. Colin Hanks plays practically the same character as in the infamous Orange County. So his character is a deja-vu to me.
Tom Hanks appears only in two scenes in the movie and doesn't strike me as a multiple-Oscar winner. I really didn't like Emily Blunt in this movie, just like in any other. However, on the bright side of things, John Malkovich was phenomenal, as per usual.
That's what I call a full character. Even though we don't get to see the revelation of his true inner self, we do get an idea of what he's like behind the curtain of his shows, but not behind the curtain of himself.
So in a sense, it's a superficial character, but John Malkovich presents it as if there is so much more to it that the viewer is dying to know. Also, I think it's necessary to mention, yet again a good performance by Steve Zahn.
Gotta love his characters in every movie. Basically, as I said, this movie had a lot to it, but Colin Hanks' character storyline made it look square and simple. Hence, the rating.
