Review of The Great Buck Howard (2008) by Shawna L — 16 Jan 2012
Based on the Great Kreskin, this is another quirky role that's perfect for John Malkovich, though this film is way more even-keeled for him. It's zany, as usual, but calm... No portals into his mind that throw people out on the side of the interstate, no plushie pigs stuffed with rocket launchers.
Just a bittersweet story about magic, the ability to believe not only in that magic but also in yourself and the importance of pursuing what makes you truly happy. Tom Hanks makes a short appearance while his actual son plays a supporting role to Malkovich.
Blount looks and sounds more normal and down to Earth than ever, which is a nice change of pace, but I still prefer her in loftier roles and period pieces, for which she is so well suited. Overall, nothing special, but it's a must-see for Malkovich fans.
