Review of The Graduate (1967) by Jessie C — 26 Sep 2010
I never did get the notority this film garnered over the decades, and I saw it first release too, in the theatre.
Too adult for me I guess. Over time it has been a movie icon, but for the life of me I didn't see that in it at the time. It was a bit too weird to have the same guy sleeping with a mother daughter duo. Perhaps that was the comedic side of this film. {see my blog video of director Nichols career].
Knowing Nichols reputation for subtle humor both on stage and as a director (the comedy duo of Mike Nichols and Elaine May was ground breaking at the time and clever, high browed humor at the time as well) I am sure the humor in the movie went right over my head.
Not for everyone, surely a cinema classic must see for any student of the industry. The bedroom scene is included in just about any documentary about film making in the US.
Maybe I had better watch this again if it is to get a better rating from me, but I don't think so, as much as I respect it getting an Oscar for Nichols.
