I thought this movie was a really good effort on Soderbergh's part. I thought it emulated the old film noir style very well (including lightitng effects). And Thomas Newman (music) obviously studied his Bernard Hermann (though you could pick up a hint or 2 of Shawshank or Green Mile every now and then).

Cate Blanchett was also very good. I thought the biggest problem was Tobey Maguire. I just never believed him. Ever. It was almost as if he was trying too hard. I'm not sure if the writing was part of it, or just the interpretation.

If you're looking for a great film noir story, forget it. But it's worth it as a modern-day study of film noir.
