Review of The Good German (2006) by Baurushan J — 19 Feb 2013
The story is set in the 1940s where the war is just over and Jake played by George Clooney is an American journalist assigned to make peace in Berlin. He was one in love with mysterious woman named Lena played by Cate Blanchett who has many secrets to hide, has every intention of burying her sins and escaping her dark past.
He then meets his motor pool driver Tully played by the criminally underrated Tobey Maguire who gets killed off after the 40-minute mark. After that, he is drawn into a deadly mystery about his driver's murder and the tense relationship between him and Lena.
The story was written well and it has a complex sense of mystery that only a certain amount of audiences can understand. This film boosted Tobey's career as he had never starred in a film like this nor ever played a role like this either after Seabiscuit and the first two Spider-Man films before he became famous in Brothers.
The music for this film is fantastic as it matches the look of the film. All the actors act exactly like in the early 20th Century which was awesome. Overall the picture itself is amazing. The Good German gets a 8/10.
