Review of The Gold Rush (1925) by Paul H — 10 Mar 2012
The Gold Rush isn't Chaplin's best feature: The Kid, The Circus and City Lights are surely more satisfying, but The Gold Rush is arguably more fun. The way it's structured is also more impressive than his other films.
Has what is likely my favorite scene in any Chaplin movie: it comes shortly after the famous dinner sequence, when he listens by the doorway as the New Year's party up ahead sings Auld Lang Syne. If I had to choose, the silent version is better, but the sound version has some changes in the plot that are more suitable to the ending.
But again, the silent version is the one worth seeking out.
