Review of The Giver (2014) by Jonathan S — 17 Dec 2014
The Giver has some fantastic cinematography, and it does its best to adapt the novella, but it really suffers in the writing department. When dealing with the subject matter of The Giver, it can be extremely difficult to convey the content in a visual form.
Because of this the writers have a challenge in expressing emotions amongst the emotionless. Jeff Bridges and the rest of the cast do a fine job with the material they are given, but really if they had just left the source material alone, these issues would be less obvious; it is completely unnecessary to throw in what are quickly becoming tired tropes (IE totalitarian control, burgeoning teen romance, etc.
) of the what may now be deemed the young adult fiction adaptation genre. If you are a fan of the novel, you may be disappointed. If you are tired of all the overused tropes of the genre, you may be annoyed.
If you aren't either of the two, then you may find enough enjoyment in the cinematography and the cast to look past the weak writing.
