Plato's allegory of the cave, by way of the SF dystopias of Huxley, Orwell, Bradbury, and even Rand to some extent. A lot better than a lot of that dystopic YA fare out there, helped by its avoiding of some of the more annoying tropes most YA films/books fall back on.
