Review of The Gauntlet (1977) by Joel A — 05 Jan 2010
This is a cop drama directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. While not his first picture, it was one of his first (5th to be exact, I believe). The story is typical of police-escorting-witness-goes awry, but Eastwood plays those grizzled, cop vets damn well, his chemistry with female lead, and witness he's protecting, Sondra Locke is extremely high.
He keeps the energy and tension high. Plays the action straight and fast, giving it a good sense of reality. He also has some great fun with the conventions of this type of story, and while it never becomes outright parody or spoof, there are moments where the movie is almost mocking itself.
The music, as per all his films, is quite fantastic, and the smooth jazzy feel fits nicely in with the rest of the movie. For all Eastwood fans, and fans of the "grizzled cop" genre, I highly recommend.
