Review of The Gate (1987) by Sam C — 20 Apr 2010
The Gate tries to mash everything good about The Goonies, Monster Squad and Poltergeist, but ultimately fails. Yet this film is pure cheese, and whether it was intentionally funny or not, you can't help but smile at some of the really well done effects (like the melting telephone).
The stop motion is a lot better than one would expect, and the fact that the lyrics from a power metal band opens up a gate to hell is just pure gold.
