Review of The Game (1997) by J D — 27 Jan 2011
This movie is more overlooked than any other movie in cinema. This one of the better mind f$%# movies made. A precursor to movies that play with your sense of what the hell is going on. A better than good performance from Michael Douglas, Kara Unger, okay most of the cast did very well. The plot loves to say, " Look over here, now here, BOO!!!!".
With that said, lets see how they could have made this movie better. Why, because they spent millions of dollars into these movies while children are starving all over the world, the LEAST they could do is make a considerable effort to make the best piece of art they can...... I'm sorry, that was kind of uncalled for, but damn it, people are spending their hard earned money on this stuff; I just want them to get their moneys worth.
1. Too long. A little editing could have made this movie into such a different experience, and made this movie less than Shutter Island, and more like Speed. It's a two hour movie. The fist half hour of it is set up for the rest of the movie.....okay, you really don't need a half an hour for set up. 15 minutes. That's all you really need. Cut an extraneous shot here, shorten a scene there, and you have an hour and a half higher adrenaline movie that felt less like watching paint dry and more like watching the down hill roller coaster destruction of a life.
Other than that really, it is an overall good movie.
I give it a B. The execution was a little too drawn out, but I found it pretty good. It's a ripe tomato, like blood on a broken mirror in a sink full of cocaine.
It was probably worth the ticket price when it came out, and I would spend 5 bucks to rent it, or own it, BUT, borrow it to see if you'd like it.
Like I said, molasses can run faster than this movie's plot, but overall, it is a well written, well acted story that will stick in your mind after you watch it, and what more can you ask from a film?
