Review of The Game (1997) by Movie K — 08 Oct 2015

Great suspense movie. Original and interesting story. Michael Douglas is a wealthy investor. His father commit suicide by jumping when he is 48 years old. His younger bro Sean Penn appear after many years wanting to celebrate his birthday.

He give him a name card CRS (Consumer Recreation Services) which provide life changing experience. Sean went through before and so recommend to him. Michael went to the office to do test. James Rebhorn try to explain what the company do.

Few days later Michael got the call from them saying he is not qualify for the game. At night a clown puppet is in front his home. Michael bring it home and took a key from it. The game has began and they even manage to alter the news to talk to him.

In the restaurant a waitress Deborah Kara Unger spill wine on his shirt and is fired for her attitude. A waiter left a note for him and left. He chase after her because the note say don't let her go.

A man fell unconscious and they both need to go hospital. Upon arrival, the hospital blackout and everyone disappear. The duo enter the lift but it can't work. Michael use the key and activate it.

Halfway through it malfunction and they climb out. After escape and go home, Michael send her home in limo service. Michael go to his hotel room and find it in a mess with drugs and photos of her. When he go home there's a break in.

Lots of neon hidden paint around the home. Sean find him and says the people behind the game refuse to stop harassing him and Michael can't get much out of it. His car breakdown and he board a cab which crash into the river.

Michael use a rivet found in the hotel room to wind down the window and escape. Michael go to the office but its vacant. The police investigate but cannot find much. He use the limo service to track down Deborah.

At her home he find the props loophole and question her. She tell him they are under spy watch. He smash the camera and a squad of shooters attack in. They manage to escape. She tell him the people behind want his money and Michael call his foreign bank and to his horror the money are wiped out.

The tests he did enable them to crack his password. The phone are tapped and the passwords and important data are known to them. Michael call his lawyer to check but he say the money are intact. She say he is involve too.

He hide in an old home. After drinking the tea she made, he is unconscious. She say everyone is involve to rob him. When he awake he is in some foreign land but manage to make his way home. Michael find his ex-wife for help and take her car and gun.

He saw James in a TV ad and know he is an actor. He find him and manage to get him in a zoo. James says he is just small actor and no idea who is the mastermind. Michael sneak into the building in his car and enter the building.

At the canteen, he saw Deborah and use her as hostage. Up at the rooftop she say they won't reveal even if she is killed. To her shock he got a gun. She call out and say the game is ending and everyone is behind with cake and wine to celebrate.

Michael don't believe. When Sean and the actors crash in, he shot Sean dead. The actors says they are doom and mishap never happen before. Michael can't take it and jump down. He landed on the inflated bag and the game truly end.

Sean didn't die and everyone are in, including the lawyer, friends and ex-wife. This truly is a life changing experience and one hell of a birthday. Michael find Deborah and she invite him for coffee.
