Review of The Fountainhead (1949) by Kurt M — 13 Oct 2007
I love this movie for the same reasons that I love Ayn Rand -- because it doesn't apologize for what it is and it doesn't pretend to care about the opinions of those who would naturally dismiss Ayn Rand's ideology.
The irony of all the reviews here by Ayn Rand haters is that Rand's advocacy for Capitalism as the prescription for the world's ills is now so accepted that its not even controversial to advocate for Capitalist solutions to just about any human issue on the planet.
Capitalism still has plenty of detractors. Still, the intellectual debate between Capitalims and Collectivism/Socialism/Fascism/Communism/Progressivism that provided the context for understanding Ayn Rand's work is mostly over with China injecting massive doses of Capitalism into their bankrupt system in order to keep their repressive regime in business.
Looking at The Fountainhead through today's lens, you might say that even ol' Ellsworth Toohey himself would be implementing some sort of Capitalist reforms to save the precious jobs of his union workers who've fallen under heavy competitve pressures :-).
This movie is best viewed with the mindset of having fun with it and not letting the inherent over-dramatization get in your way of enjoying what is otherwise a very fun movie.
If your from Kentucky, like I am -- then this movie is a must see because of Patricial Neal's wonderfully wacky portrayal of Domique Francon.
