Review of The Fountain (2006) by Sanchayan S — 30 Mar 2014
Visually pleasant but the film "The Fountain" is often too much into metaphysics that it out thinks the writer himself. Too many symbolism and the obscure nature of each of them leaves a lot of questions in mind none of which has been resolved by any means.
Its all foggy and cloudy and nothing can be even remotely believed. The biblical references and symbolism are often over the top trying to be subtle but more often than not failing to do so. After a certain while the morphing of scenes becomes one trick and adds to the obscurity of the movie.
Darren Aronofsky''s "The fountain" is abstract even on repeated viewings and that in a bad way. Nevertheless it is brilliant visually with a rich sense of details and excellent aptitude for capturing the details.
The visual aesthetic alone with the good underlying score and a good performance from Hugh Jackman makes this a worth watch despite the heavy ambiguity of the screenplay.
