Review of The Flowers of War (2011) by Abhilash S — 16 Feb 2012
Just watched Jin lÃng shà san chai aka The Flowers of War. I was actually waiting for this movie as it stars Christian Bale in it. Usually I dont watch any of the Chinese movie, but as this movie had Bale in it, I just had to.
The trailer right away impressed me to the core, but as the movie released, it had mixed reviews and I was a bit disappointed. But..damn those reviews. This one's a beautiful movie, shows the reality of the real incident or rather should call it a massacre of Nanjing/Nanking (the city) the Japanese did in China.
..brutally raped, murdered and all the other violence they did. Of course the movie just revolves around it and the movie is a fictional portrayal of an incident where an american, some girls of a church and a group of prostitutes are involved.
The high point of the movie is without any doubt, Christian Bale. He adds a new dimension in this movie. His presence in the movie not only makes the movie powerful but soulful. With his ecstatic performance and delivery of dialogues and emotions, it surely is one of his best performance.
Bale is the perfect guy for this role, he did it with perfection. He sure is one of the best actors we have, but sadly he has been under rated. Christian Bale was overshadowed in The Dark Knight by Joker's character, but he actually did it amazingly well.
He does it even better in this movie. Christian Bale is top notch in the movie. The direction is pretty good. The dramatic presentation of the war etc. is remarkable and is somewhat stylish. The background score of the movie is impressive and very much goes with the mood of the movie.
Ni Ni (Mu Yo in the movie) gives a fine performance. The ending could have been a little bit tighter. Sure, the movie is a bit cliched, but the performance of Bale and the emotional story of the movie easily overpowers it.
One of the best movie of the year 2011 and very much underrated. The Flowers of War is an under rated movie with a stellar performance by Christian Bale.
