Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Sam S — 12 Nov 2017
I am giving Project Florida 4 stars, but this underestimates its importance and impact. I can see why audiences score this lower than critics: It's a tough film to watch. The protagonists are six year old kids, and the movie does a wonderful job of capturing their creativity and optimism in the face of poverty and financial challenges that break, or nearly break their parents.
William Defoe turns in a subtle performance of the hotel manager torn between his job as a hard nosed responsibilities and the humanity unleashed in the precocious personalities of the young children who live in his hotel as their mothers scrape up he dollars necessary to keep them housed.
If you need resolution in your movies, however, don't see it. If you want to immerse yourself in a world of good hearted people living on the edge, this film will make you think. Great performances by the kids, particularly Brooklyn Prince as 6-year old Moonie.
