Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Wayne M — 14 Jan 2018
The Florida Project is authentic to the bone. Honest, refreshing, a huge slice of life. Set on the outskirts of Orlando this is a look at the bottom end of society. Broken families with little money living in poor motels and only small amounts of hope.
Willem Dafoe is just superb as the manager of one said motel, but we all know how great he is. The real discovery here are the kids. Kids of broken families and little supervision. One in particular in Moonee, played with startling clarity by Brooklynn Prince.
A huge chunk of this film is seen through the eyes of these children. So even though there are stark realities through the film we also see the magical and mischievous times of the children trying to make some sort of sense of the world around them.
Director Sean Baker has excelled again at filming a part of society that would normally be overlooked. And he does it with unflinching honesty and no signs of judgment. Sometimes the best films are ones that are able to make something extraordinary out of the ordinary.
This is one just film.
