Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Jonathan B — 15 Jan 2018
The Florida Project is a captivating movie featuring mostly first-time actors and a very loose narrative. If focuses on six-year-old Moonee living with her troubled mom in a $35-a-day motel just a few blocks from Disney World in Orlando.
With little supervision, Moonee and her friends treat the tourist-centered neighborhood as their own theme park ... where an abandoned house is as enthralling and mysterious as the Disney Haunted Castle they've never visited.
Willem Dafoe, the only actor I recognized, is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination as the manager of a motel where the adults are either just hanging on or are sinking into deep trouble. It's not for everybody, but it's one of my favorite movies of 2017.
It also features the best kid actors since The Beasts of the Southern Wild.
