Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Frank C — 15 Nov 2017
Take away the beautiful cinematography, the excellent W Defoe and the incredibly natural kids, and you have 2 hours of pretentious, repetitive overlong magic realist misery porn; I'm always a bit suspicious of socially conscious indie filmmakers, who may be using the subject matter at film festivals as a passport to bigger, more commercially viable, projects.
If you are kindly reading these comments, you may find this all a bit harsh; but please keep in mind that I watch nearly everything and worked for a cinema chain for a decade. Truth is; most films have a target market and poor people won't watch similar people suffering.
This story is for the audience I sat beside; middle brow middle classes who, if they are honest, get a little vicarious thrill to see such sad stories. Better to donate to a worthy cause than sit through this ordeal that ticks all the critic's boxes.
