Review of The Five Obstructions (2003) by Robert S — 25 Mar 2008
A lot of people are put off by the palpable acrimony between Lars Von Trier and Jorgen Leth in this film, but seeing as how Leth is not only an adult but a filmmaker as well, I think he was well within the bounds of sanity when he agreed to undertake the project, knowing full well Von Trier was going to subject him to cinematic gamesmanship sans pariel.
With that in mind, I see the film more as having more in common with Herzog's farcical films (like Incident at Loch Ness), though much more mean-spirited. It's engrossing and, at times, totally uncalled for, but never failing to communicate a message of hope and redemption amidst squalor and pyschological torture.
