Review of The Exorcist III (1990) by Tommy H — 14 Apr 2015
The only thing that really weighs the film down is its connection to The Exorcist. It seems like two different movies were being made -- one a supernatural mystery about the Gemini Killer, and the other a sequel to The Exorcist.
It's a great movie, but a little disappointing as a sequel. The movie industry has us trained to expect the predictable and when we're shown something new we react defensively like a territorial animal.
It's new and there are no scenes that really stand out to sell the film. The killer doesn't wear an iconic mask and the possession doesn't do anything to effect us emotionally like with Linda Blair.
It's easy to forget the movie, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The atmosphere is creepier than the original, the mystery element is interesting, and there are many great performances, especially Brad Dourif.
The film might have become a classic if it was either more like the original movie or if it dropped the Exorcist title and tried to be its own movie.
