Review of The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) by Brian S — 23 Oct 2011
There's just something about this movie I don't really like, and I'm not exactly sure what it is. it could be the odd juxtaposition of courtroom drama and horror. it could be the "supernatural" elements involved with Laura Linney's character.
it could be that Jennifer Carpenter seemed hammy and melodramatic more than she seemed possessed and terrified. it could be the religious element of the story didn't seem all that well-handled or properly-written.
it could be a lot of different things, including that none of what I just mentioned was that big a deal and those things in fact enhanced the movie. I rather like the idea of questioning one's faith--in anything, really, it doesn't even have to be God.
this movie seems to do that fairly well, I just can't get on board that it was solidly entertaining.
