Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Julian J — 01 Apr 2009
David Lynch's tragic study of Joseph (John) Merrick, better known as 'the elephant man', is a deeply moving and challenging watch. We discover after our initial repulsion at Merrick's horrific disfigurement that he is in fact a wonderful, eloquent, sensitive man who has been terribly damaged by the way people react to him yet nevertheless is able to understand and forgive them.
This would all sound like Hollywood nonsense if it weren't for the fact that this is an entirely true story and for that, it is all the more brilliant. This film is probably the biggest supporter I have ever seen of the idea that true beauty is found within.
Beware, you will almost certainly cry at some point in this film.
