Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Tom S — 02 Jan 2010
Moving drama about a severely disfigured man (John Hurt) who is rescued from a life of ridicule in a circus freak show by a good-hearted surgeon (Anthony Hopkins). Based on the true story of John Merrick, director David Lynch paints a sad yet ultimately hopeful picture of dignity gained in the face of prejudice and cruelty.
Hidden under a wealth of elaborate makeup, Hurt still manages to convey the pain of a deeply tormented man, while Hopkins is also quietly effective as the stoic Dr Treves.
