Review of The Elephant Man (1980) by Chris H — 30 Mar 2018
The most worthy use, by far, of Lynch's genius and talent. Comparing this to other classic, characteristic works of his like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, one is struck by how much better off the film world would be if Lynch directed other people's stories instead of his own. Beautiful, moving, provocative, artistically rapturous -- Lynch, here, as few other directors also have done, elevates the medium to its grandest potential.
If I were to recommend only one Lynch film it would be this, without hesitation. As John Hurt (who plays The Elephant Man) put it, "If you can get to the end of [the movie] without being moved, I don't think you'd be someone I'd want to know." Not to be outdone by its emotional power, its technical and artistic merit are just what you'd expect from Lynch and more.
